A Dash of JavaScript: Tuning Your Site's User Experience

>>View Presentation Slides

User interfaces and displays can  have their verbiage adjusted to better suit your site’s specific user experience, but sometimes the change you want to make isn’t just in the text of the interface. Just like using strategically placed HTML tags in the text interface fields can be used to adjust formatting of a field, JavaScript can be used in the text interface to adjust the content of your interfaces beyond just simple formatting. With the modern JavaScript library jQuery available to you, creating scripts that target elements on your pages and modify them is much easier than you may expect.

This session will cover the risks and rewards of getting into the world of client-side script writing. Simple examples of jQuery-based scripts will be used to demonstrate how to remove an unwanted element from a public search interface, how to change both the name of and page destination of a hard-coded link in the interface, and how to add conditional logic to a script to generate an alert based on the contents of an application page. The session will also cover best practices for maintaining these scripts between software updates and what types of scripting you should avoid.

While some basic knowledge of JavaScript and HTML documents will be useful for this session, it is not necessary to follow along with the examples. The proof-of-concepts covered should be able to be followed by any user with a basic understanding of Terra Dotta Applications.
